This article points out that most home users that only want to share their high speed Internet connection do not need the new 802.11g equipment, and can purchase the older 802.11b equipment at a lower price. The math is simple: 1.5 Mbps DSL connection running on either an 11 Mbps connection (802.11b), or a 54 Mbps connection (802.11g).
